The Sounds of Truth Kirtan Experience

  • The Yogi Tree 4475 Vineland Avenue Los Angeles, CA, 91602 United States (map)

Join Oren Atma Bhajan Selah, Alicia Pizzi ,Brian Kukan, and special guests including Jennifer Lakhmi Chand Kelly and others for an evening of live music & dynamic Kirtan. Mantra-music from various traditions, including guided meditations. Followed by a collaborative Soundbath savasana. Come chant your heart out, shake a tail feather, or just relax, rejuvenate, and soak it up!

Kirtan is a very different kind of music based on ancient mantras (chants) & the tradition of Bhakti Yoga. Mantras have the ability to quiet the mind with no effort other than chanting along or simply listening. The word “yoga” means union. In this yogic practice, we use the emotions, our passions, and our heart’s longing to fuel our quest for union between our mind, body, & spirit, and with something greater than ourselves. A Kirtan occasion is a very simple & powerful way to meditate joyfully & effortlessly, the music does the work for you as you.

Kirtan is less of a performance and more of a collaborative experience between the leaders and attendees who create the experience together.

The chants offered at these occasions are from various traditions including Kundalini, Hindu, Sufism, Judaism, Buddhism, and Western. They are sung in Gurmukhi, Sanskrit, Arabic, Hebrew, or English. These ancient chants contain powerful renewing & transformative energy that helps us reconnect with the Divinity that resides within all of us. There are 84 meridian points on the hard palette of the mouth just behind the upper teeth. When we chant repetitive phrases the tongue strikes these meridian points creating a patterned response in the Hypothalamus region of the brain, the Pituitary gland, all the associated glands of the body, and by extension in the subtle counterparts of the glands, the chakras or energy centers of the body. Most chants are sung while resting in a comfortable position, chants from the Kundalini Yoga tradition offer the opportunity to engage postures (asana), hand positions (mudras), or movement (kriya).

This occasion will begin with Kirtan, and will end with a collaborative Reiki-healing soundbath including gongs, Tambura, bowls, wood flute, hands-on tuning forks and more.
